The influence of the Soret effect on transient solidification of alloys in a horizontal Bridgman apparatus

The study of the transient solidification of a binary alloy in a horizontal Bridgman apparatus has been undertaken. A fixed grid approach has been used to solve a phase change problem. Soret effect has been taken into account by including an additional thermodiffusion term into the solute transport equation. The influence of the Soret effect on directional solidification of Bi-Sn alloy in a Bridgman furnace in microgravity environment is investigated. Numerical solutions are compared with the results from the MEPHISTO-4 experiment on the US Space Shuttle Columbia. The effects of thermal and solutal convection and of concentration-dependent melting temperature on the phase change processes are included.
