CONVECTION AT THE BASE OF A CYLINDER WITH A HORSESHOE VORTEX

In many applications, such as compact heat exchangers, electronic cooling, and gas turbines, the heat load on an object placed normal to the flow is primarily dependent on that near the base of the object where it intersects a surface. Experiments were conducted using a circular cylinder placed normal to a flat plate aligned parallel to the flow. Detailed measurements of the transfer rates on the forward portion of the cylinder near the intersection were obtained using a mass transfer technique. Measurements were taken both with and without mass transfer on the plate for a Reynolds number of 110,000 and a boundary layer thickness-to-cylinder diameter ratio of 0.16. In both cases, a large spanwise variation in mass transfer was found near the plate as a result of the boundary layer roll-up. The average mass transfer rate in this region, however, was found to be nearly identical to the rate measured far away from the intersection.
