A serpentine passage cooling circuit has been evaluated with and without turbulence promoters in the 40,000 to 120,000 Reynolds number range. The pressure drop distributions were measured across the inlet, serpentine, and exit passages, providing the information to calculate discharge coefficients, friction factors, and pressure loss coefficients. The pressure drop across the system is dominated by the 180° turns. The local heat transfer coefficient distributions along the bottom face were measured using a thin foil heater with a liquid crystal element. This new thermographic technique records outstanding details on the local heat transfer coefficients as related to the global flow field present in the passages, as well as the local effects between two adjacent turbulence promoters. The results show jet impingement regions, flow circulation areas, stagnation regions, and wall jet configurations that cannot all be modeled by rectangular duct correlations.
