The main failure modes which are to be avoided in a pool type fast breeder reactor are basically:creep, fatigue and buckling. Each of these phenomena are strongly dependant on the temperatures. Therefore an accurate evaluation of the temperatures, during steady-state and transient conditions, should be carried out all through the whole study process from the operating conditions analyses into the metal thermal response analyses.
On a first step, the operating conditions analyses enable the designer to define global parameters.
These data are used in a second step to derive the evolution of the fluid temperatures around the components of the structure.
In a third step we calculate then the thermal response of the components themselves.
And in a fourth step we investigate whether the creep-fatigue and buckling criteria are met or not.
This paper gives some trends on the accuracy for the temperature results in order to assess the mechanical damage rates in a confident way.
