In the attempt to explore an effective and reliable cooling scheme for high density power equipment, an experimental study is conducted on a gravity-assistant planar heat pipe with vertical tins attached on the external surface in natural air convection. The heal pipe-tins assembly shows a base temperature rise of lower than 70 °C and a temperature drop from the base to tip of 35 %#176; C on a heat input of 7.35 W/cm2. While, a plate-fins assembly of the same configuration and outline dimensions displays a base temperature rise about 105 %#176; C and a temperature drop larger than 80 ° C on a heat input of 6.65 W/cm2. Advantages of large reductions in the base temperature rise and increases in the effective thermal conductance confirm the capability of a planar heat pipe acting as a high conductive path between the source and ambient, even in natural air convection.
