要約

Heat conduction in non-metals occurs by transport of crystal vibrations or phonons. Phonons, like photons, follow Bose-Einstein statistics with an energy distribution close to that of a blackbody. For radiative heat transfer by photons, spectrally dependent scattering such as filtering, Rayleigh scattering, etc have been utilized for many technological applications. Despite the similarities between radiative heat transfer by photons and heat conduction by phonons, spectrally dependent phonon scattering has not been exploited to manipulate heat conduction. This paper reports a theoretical and an experimental study where this has indeed been achieved. Furthermore, the paper also presents some future directions where such an approach could be exploited to push the limits of heat conduction at both extremes, using concepts such as phonon filtering, localization and waveguiding, etc. This can have major implications on energy conservation and conversion.
