要約

This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of the thermal performance of phase change material (PCM) based composite heat sinks with discrete heat sources. Four discrete heat sources whose heating levels can be individually controlled are kept at the bottom of the composite heat sink. This experimental setup typically mimics electronic packages inside Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). The PCM used in this study is n-eicosane. The heat sink has 72 pin fins, which act as thermal conductivity enhancers (TCE). The major goal of this investigation is to explore and quantify the enhancement of the thermal performance of the heat sink that is associated with the use of the PCM either in terms of increased operating time or reduced temperature for a given duration of operation. Comparisons are done with a baseline case of a heat sink with fins, but no PCM. The eventual goal is to determine the power level combinations on the four heaters that maximize the time of operation of the device, which is defined as the time the device takes to reach a particular temperature.
