Resumo

When inertia forces on a growing bubble are large in relation to interfacial tension the bubble is hemispherical in shape. Whereas a spherical bubble in a flowing liquid moves away from the immediate vicinity of a solid surface a hemispherical one does not but moves over the surface with a thin layer of liquid between it and the surface. Change in bubble shape is thus a criterion for bubble departure. It is shown that the formation of a dry patch beneath the moving bubble is one cause of change of shape and a mechanism is proposed by which this can lead to a critical heat flux situation.
