Heat transfer phenomena will be reviewed for polymeric fluids, the largest class of non-Newtonian materials. The rheological properties together with the extreme thermal properties give rise to very specific heat transfer behavior. The rheology of polymeric fluids is described together with its temperature dependence. The important dimensionless groups are discussed. The sensitivity of the physical properties to temperature results in a pronounced coupling between temperature and flow field. Nonisothermal flow (related to polymer processing) at various boundary conditions is analyzed. Influential rheological phenomena are shear thinning, large viscous dissipation, elasticity. Solution procedures are given for heat transfer in shear flow (neglecting elasticity) and for the development of molecular orientation in nonisothermal flows of molten polymers. The orientation development is described by a memory integral constitutive equation.
