Resumo

The transient solution of the conduction equation for the case corresponding to the heat flow in the slab of earth below an on-ground cylindrical thermal storage tank has been obtained analytically. The field considered is bounded by two parallel horizontal planes. The upper plane, corresponding to the surface of the earth, contains an isothermal disc representing the tank bottom, and the isothermal surrounding surface; both regions with time varying temperatures. The lower plane, corresponding to the water table, is considered to be isothermal and of constant temperature. Two independent steady-state solutions, developed using integral transform and separation of variables techniques, give mutually consistent results and agree with the limit values obtained with the transient solution. A simplification to a lumped parameter model is offered for the convenience of designers.
