EFFECT OF GEOMETRY AND WALL THICKNESS ON HEAT TRANSFER FROM LONGITUDINAL FINS TO BOILING LIQUIDS

Resumo

All prior design methods for extended surfaces used in boiling heat transfer have employed one-dimensional conduction calculations. The present study used two-dimensional calculations on a large digital computer. Longitudinal, rectangular fins of five metals in water and Freon-113 boiling at atmospheric pressure were considered. The heat duty and the temperature distribution in the fin and the wall were found. Variables included fin lengths from 0.2 to 3-5 cm, aspect ratios from 1/6 to 6, clearances from 0.8 to 15 cm, wall thickness from 0.15 to 3.0 cm, and conductivities from stainless steel to copper. For small Biot numbers, the 1-D and 2-D cases are identical. Optimizations are based on volume or projected area.
