BOILING SODIUM HEAT TRANSFER

Resumo

Boiling sodium heat transfer was investigated experimentally under forced-convection and free-convection conditions. Cylindrical test sections of essentially identical geometry were used in both types of experiments. Measurements of heat transfer rates and surface temperatures were made at subatmospheric pressures and at heat fluxes up to 1.6 × 106 Btu/hr-ft2. Pool-boiling heat transfer coefficients were in fair agreement with the Forster-Zuber predictions; forced convection results indicated approximate agreement with the superposition hypothesis. Pool-boiling critical heat flux (CHF) was found to be a very weak function of pressure. The dependence of forced-convection CHF on pressure, flow, and subcooling or vapor fraction was found to generally agree with qualitative trends for other fluids.
