Resumo

Tests were performed to determine the influence of the number of real contact points and of compressive load on the heat transfer across metallic joints. The test joints were formed between wedge shaped surface asperities of varying pitching, the number of real contacts ranging from unity to 1016. Wedges with angles of 60°, 120° and 160° were tested.

The heat transfer test results indicated that the effective 'hardness' of the crossed wedge contacts increased by a factor of about five as the individual spot load changed from 1000 lbf to 0.1 lbf, for cold rolled nickel specimens. A similar trend was found with mild steel specimens.
