A THEORETICAL CONSIDERATION FOR PREDICTING HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF A TUBE BANK FROM MEASUREMENTS WITH A SINGLE TEST TUBE

The present paper describes a method for predicting laminar heat transfer characteristics of a staggered tube bank from those of a single heated test tube in the bank. The authors' previous numerical method has been applied to the condition where only the test tube placed at the first or third row in a dummy tube bank participates in heat transfer process. The local heat transfer coefficients for the test tube are compared with those calculated for all tubes heated condition. From the average heat transfer coefficient obtained for the test tube, the heat transfer rate from each tube row can be predicted by introducing an adequate temperature difference. Overall heat transfer rate through the tube bank can be predicted within an error of 10% in the ranges of Rem = 120 − 300 and Pr = 0.7 − 300 and for pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.5×1.5. More precise prediction will be possible when the measurements are performed for two test tubes, which are placed at the first and second tube rows and heated simultaneously.
