Resumo

Natural convection in vertical, rectangular cavities is of interest to designers of nuclear reactors. There is a considerable amount of data on overall heat-transfer rates but little or no data on the temperature and velocity fields in such flows. This paper reports results from the first stage of an investigation aimed at providing such data.
Measured distributions of both mean temperature and the intensity of temperature fluctuations are presented and the profiles in the boundary layers on the vertical walls are compared with data for a boundary layer on an isolated surface. A strong influence of the thermal stratification In the core, on the boundary layers, is noted.
Local heat-transfer rates are determined from the temperature profiles very close to the walls.
