Resumo

This paper presents the results of an experimental research project on the fluid dynamics of two-phase air-water mixtures in a horizontal duct with sudden area reduction.
The following flow patterns were examined upstream of the singularity: stratified-wavy flow regime, "pseudo-slug" and slug flow.
The experimental pressure drop associated with the singularity shows a peculiar trend: at equal liquid superficial velocity, pressure drop increases with the gas fraction of the volume flow, reaches a maximum and, after experiencing a minimum, increases once again. This behaviour is not anticipated by any of the models so far proposed in the relative literature.
