Resumo

The performance of high temperature waste heat recuperators with silicon carbide (SiC) tubes can be substantially improved by enhancing the heat transfer to the clean air flowing inside the tubes. An experimental facility was designed and constructed to study the convective heat transfer enhancement provided by SiC tubes with axial fins or twisted−tape inserts. Several internally finned SiC tubes were developed for use in this study and from this some very practical information about the capabilities and limitations of these tubes was gained. The experimental data for both the friction factor and the heat transfer coefficient are presented. These data were typically found to be within 20% of conventional metallic tube correlations. In addition, performance comparisons between enhanced tubes and plain tubes are presented that show the benefits when both thermal and hydraulic performance are considered.
