Resumo

The natural convection from a heated sphere in an unbounded region of porous medium is investigated. At large values of the Rayleigh number a second-order boundary-layer solution is found which takes into account the first-order plume solution. For finite values of the Rayleigh number a specialised finite-difference scheme is developed which is second-order accurate everywhere. Numerical difficulties arise with the plume and the infinity boundary conditions and a method is devised to overcome these problems. The variation of the Nusselt number as a function of position and Rayleigh number is presented along with the effects of mesh size. Also presented are the streamline patterns at finite values of the Rayleigh number along with the asymptotic solution.
