Resumo

The radiative properties of fly ashes are estimated by means of the Mie theory which requires knowledge of the particle shape, of the wavelength dependent complex refractive index and the particle diameter. While the particles are assumed to be spherical, the refractive index is evaluated from the chemical composition of the ash in good agreement with measurements of Goodwin [1]. Data are presented for more than fifty ashes with known particle size distributions from different power stations. Considerable differences are observed between the data evaluated as averages over the size distribution and those obtained for mean particle diameters.
