Resumo

The long computer times and reduced precision associated with using Monte Carlo techniques to predict radiative transfer in optically thick media often preclude their use. This paper presents an alternative, using a hybrid method composed of both Monte Carlo and diffusion techniques which improves accuracy and reduces computer run times. Two hybrid approaches are discussed. The implementation of both approaches in a general computer code is described. Comparisons are made between results by the hybrid methods and pure Monte Carlo for an inhomogeneous one-dimensional medium and a three-dimensional non-gray medium containing scattering particulates.
