Resumo

Empirical and phenomenological models of unconfined pool and torch fires are widely available. These tools are perfectly adequate as predictors of gross properties of the fire, but they are incapable of addressing general situations, such as complex geometries involving containments or obstructions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), by its nature, is general, and is being applied to a variety of fire types as part of a research programme at AEA Technology. Before targeting complex configurations, the CFD model was applied to the simpler situation of an unconfined large-scale hydrocarbon pool fire, as part of a validation exercise, for comparison against the empirical models and experimental data. The paper will specifically outline the influence of the bund on the fire behaviour.
