Resumo

This paper deals with the scattering of radiation by a particle with a rough surface. A new technique is presented for modelling a flake-type metal particle with a rough surface which has a three-dimensional self-similar micro-structure. The scattering behavior by the particle is described on the basis of an electromagnetic wave theory. The behavior is characterized by three factors: the wavelength of radiation, the size of the particle and the size of micro-structure on the particle surface. It is shown that the scattering behavior changes from the particle scattering-type to the surface scattering-type with an increase in the particle size. It is emphasized that the size parameter range in which conventional theories for particle scattering are directly applicable is restricted.
