COOLING CHARACTERISTICS OF A VERTICAL PLATE HEATER IN A COMPOSITE ENCLOSURE FILLED WITH PCM/AIR LAYERS

Resumo

This paper presents a numerical study concerning transient cooling characteristics of a vertical heat-generating plate sandwiched between a layer of phase change material (n-Octadecane) and a layer of air, forming a composite vertical rectangular enclosure. Numerical results are presented to unveil the characteristics of heat dissipation from the heater plate through the PCM- and air-filled composite enclosure. The results demonstrate that the PCM-filled subenclosure is more capable of dissipating heat from the hot plate than the air-filled subenclosure. In particular, the maximum temperature of the heat-generating plate can be maintained to approach a steady-state value mainly through the effective cooling capacity of the PCM subenclosure due to its latent heat absorption associated with solid-liquid phase change phenomenon. Parametric effects of the modified Rayleigh number, the modified Stefan number, and the subcooling factor on the cooling of the plate heater are discussed.
