Resumo

The spirally fluted tube of Yampolsky (1979) achieves quite remarkable heat-transfer performance. Increases in heat transfer of 50-300% relative to a smooth tube are obtained, while the corresponding friction factor is reduced or, at worse, not increased relative to that of a smooth tube.
The present contribution provides detailed experimental and computational data of the mean- and fluctuating-velocity field arising in spirally fluted tubes. This allows, for the first time, a consistent explanation to be advanced for the observed behaviour. Computations of the heat-transfer behaviour bring out that, as observed experimentally, it is especially high Prandtl-number mixing that is enhanced by passage through spirally fluted tubing.
