Resumo

The paper describes measurement by laser Doppler anemometry of recirculating liquid velocities around the bottom of an experimental thin slice kettle reboiler with 241 tubes, boiling R113 at atmospheric pressure. Uniform heat flux densities, q, of 5, 20, 40 and 50 kW/m2 were imposed. Distribution of circulation to the columns of the bundle was calculated by integrating the measured velocities. The paper reports the results of the calculation. It is shown that, although the circulation rate is much lower than measured by Cornwell et al (1980) at all heat fluxes, it agrees within experimental error with the models of Jensen (1988) extrapolated to lower weir heights and with the model of Brisbane et al (1980) at q = 40 and 50 kW/ m2. However both of these models predict much higher circulation rates at q = 5 and 20 kW/ m2 than measured.
