Resumo

A numerical study was conducted to analyze the conjugate heat transfer from discrete isothermal heat sources mounted on a substrate which forms one wall of a turbulent flow channel. Two and three dimensional cases of flush mounted heat sources, as well as two dimensional protruding heat sources, were studied. The effects of important parameters relative to thermal and flow conditions, fluid properties and geometric configurations are presented. The resultant heat transfer is presented in terms of the local heat flux and division of heat transfer into three primary paths (i) direct convection from the heat source, (ii) convection from the substrate interface with the channel, and (iii) conduction through the substrate. The back-side of the substrate is maintained isothermal with different prescribed temperatures relative to the fluid inlet temperature and the heat source temperature. A dimensionless parameter is introduced, the conjugate Biot Number, Bie, which identifies the ratio of conductive to convective thermal resistance experienced by the heat source. The dependence of Bie on the channel Reynolds number, the substrate isothermal boundary condition and substrate-to-fluid thermal conductivity is discussed.
