Resumo

A numerical model capable of predicting the thermal performance of rotary regenerative heat exchangers found in large fossil-fuelled power stations is described and validated against measured plant data. The model accommodates both the rotating matrix and rotating hood types of heat exchangers and caters for multiple fluid streams and multiple layers of packing of different types, as well as leakage and fouling effects. The heat transfer matrix consists of packs of corrugated plates, with a variety of plate configurations in use. Each plate configuration has distinctive performance characteristics, which must be determined empirically, in terms of heat transfer, pressure drop and proneness to erosion and fouling. The heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops over a range of air velocities are measured for any given plate configuration in a thermal test facility that employs the single blow transient method. The test facility and the associated finite difference data analysis techniques are briefly described.
The output from the heat exchanger model consists of stream outlet temperatures and periodic plate temperature variations at any node. The validity of the predictions was confirmed for both types of air heater by comparison with the measured stream temperatures in 600 MWe boilers at two South African power stations. Results for one type are presented in this paper. Taken together, the model and the single blow thermal test facility have the particular advantage of allowing the prediction of the performance of an air heater packed with plates of newly-developed types.
