Resumo

In this paper, an elemental T shaped unit of a constructal network has been optimized. The effects of junction losses and surface roughness on the optimal shape of fluid flow passages are considered. It is shown that the effect of the junction losses on the design of the fluid flow passage decreases as the svelteness ratio Sv, the ratio between the external constraint (area) and the internal constraint (volume of the flow passages), becomes larger. Two dimensionless terms, the dimensionless shape parameter p~ and the dimensionless group MS1/2/μ are introduced. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of these two parameters in the optimization of flow networks. The performance of an optimal T shaped unit in the cooling of a heat generating plate is reported.
