This paper presents a numerical study of microchannel cooling and heat transfer in three-dimensional geometry, which includes a rectangular high-aspect ratio channel and surrounding heat sinks, similar to an experimental investigation. The heating source is provided by four electronic cartridges and the coolant medium is water at ambient temperature. Two typical channel heights, 0.3 and 1mm are considered in the current study and the Reynolds number is in a range of 800−2000, based on the hydraulic diameter. The simulation started with validation exercises, in which the results are in good agreement with the theory, followed by further investigations, focusing on the Reynolds number and the micro-channel height influences on the Nusselt number variations. It is confirmed that the Reynolds number does have noticeable effects on the local Nusselt number distributions, in agreement with other researchers. The predicted dimensionless temperature of the fluid agrees the experimental data very well; however the dimensionless temperature of the solid has significant discrepancy compared to the experimental data, similar to that found in other numerical studies. In contrary to a numerical study by other researchers, where the size effect has not been evident, the present study reveals the significant scaling effects at small channel height of 0.3mm, in agreement with the experimental measurements. Finally a correlation of channel heights and normalised Nusselt number has been proposed which agrees with the simulation results and experimental data quite well.
