Resumo

Numerical and experimental study of gallium melting in a rectangular box with a heated side face was conducted. An advanced 3D numerical simulation, taking into consideration thermal variations of medium properties and the presence of mushy zone, were performed and validated with experimental results. An experimental setup, oriented to trace the liquid-solid interface position and profile and melt velocity using ultrasonic Doppler velocity measurements in the liquid phase, was developed. The numerical simulation was based on COMSOL Multiphysics software. 3D simulations were carried out to calculate melting regime parameters and flow characteristics. The outputs of these simulations were compared with known experimental data and new ones obtained on our facilities. An agreement between 3D computed and experimental data indicates a profound effect of boundaries. Influence of the box dimensions on the process characteristics was estimated numerically.
