Resumo

Consider a media intended to maximize the heat transfer of a thermal sink. For some configurations an embedded insulating portion in the sink will prevent direct conduction from the hot base of the sink to the coolant. Depending on the configuration an optimumdesign can be developed that emphasizes the effect of an anisotropic material. That is the off diagonal conductivity can direct the heat flow around the insulator. However, it is possible to define a topological design based upon an anisotropicmaterial. These designs composed of material regions of high density coupled with vacuous regions can be produced with 3-D printing,. The paper describes the construction of such a design based upon topological optimization.
