Resumo

A battery module using phase change material (PCM) coupled with liquid cooling was developed to achieve the goal of battery thermal management. The conjugated structure consisted of the cylindrical batteries, the heat spreading plate, the thermal columns, and cold plate populated with micro-channels, connected in series. The heat spreading plate was allocated at the upper portion of the battery module and connected to 106 mock-up batteries, acting as both mechanical fixture and heat spreading plate. The liquid cooled cold plate was installed separately at the bottom of the battery module, which avoided the possible liquid leakage into the battery module and enhanced the safety of the battery module. The experiments were conducted by heating the batteries and measuring the zonal temperatures in the battery module. The experimental results show that the conjugated cooling with both PCM and liquid circulation significantly reduces the battery temperature rise compared to the other cooling options. The maximum temperature and the maximum temperature differences of the battery module can be controlled below 58°C and 3°C for the conjugated cooling case at high level of battery cell heating of 3-5W heat inputs, indicating a good thermal performance of the conjugated heat dissipation structure.
