STUDIES OF WATERSIDE CORROSION AND HEAT TRANSFER ON LMFBR EVAPORATOR TUBES

A useful method for studying heat transfer and waterside corrosion on short lengths of LMFBR evaporator tube, under representative conditions (350° C, 176 bar), is described. The technique allows simple control of the applied heat flux during steady running and of the temperature ramps during dryout transients. Waterside heat transfer coefficients based on outside wall temperature measurements are in general agreement with predictions for single phase and boiling heat transfer. Because of the short test section length, dryout tests induced by a flow reduction indicated dryout qualities close to 100%. The rate of waterside corrosion was found to be insensitive to changes in heat flux or steam quality. The oxide layer, produced by corrosion and deposition, resulted in a small increase of outside wall temperature - corresponding to an oxide thermal conductivity of 1.9 W/m° C. The integrity of the layer was unaffected by thirty dryout transients.
