This paper experimentally investigates heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop due to solid and perforated rectangular cross sectional blocks on a flat surface in a channel flow. The experiments covered the following range: Reynolds number (Re) 6670-40000, the hole inclination angle (Θ) 0°-45°, the perforation open-area ratio (φ) 0.05-0.15, the perforation diameter (D) 2.5-8.0 mm, and the number of the blocks (N) 2-7. The blocks were positioned both transverse and parallel to the main flow direction. The parallel blocks were arranged both in-line and staggered fashion. Results showed that the heat transfer enhancement increased with increasing Θ,φ , N and D and decreasing Re. The pressure drop was not affected by Θ while it decreased with increasing D, Re and φ and decreasing N. The solid blocks led to energy losses up to 20% but with the perforated blocks it was possible to achieve energy gains up to 40%.
