The review published in this lecture is an attempt to enlighten the problem of mathematical modeling of the two phase flow. Particular attention was focused to the analysis of averaging procedure used in converting the local instantaneous balance equation to the space or time averaged system which could be used for averaged system which could be used for the comparison with available experimental data. It has shown that time averaged approach applied to the analysis of void fraction, kinetic turbulent energy in two phase system gained support by the experimental evidence for the steady state experimental results. Volume averaged approach has been used in a number of nuclear reactor safety assessment codes. Its application to the prediction of the transient behavior of the specific transients has shown good agreement for the conditions where flow pattern change is not taking place. For the case where flow pattern change is taking place limiting parameters are needed and respective rescaling is required.
Particular attention has been given to the analysis of ZUBER and FINDLEY void fraction distribution, DREW and LAHEY modeling of turbulence in two phase flow and its comparison with SERIZAWA data. In the reactor transient analysis emphasize was given to RIZNIC analysis of REOCREUX experimental data, POPOV modeling of the CREARE experiment and BOGDAN attempt to model the spatial distribution thermal-hydraulic parameter with three dimensional code. Using one, two and three dimensional volume averaging procedure in modeling respective phenomena and comparing results obtained with numerical simulation with respective experimentally obtained results, a limiting validity of the mathematical methods used for the transient analysis of the two phase system was shown.
