NATURAL CONVECTION IN POROUS INSULATION LAYERS CONTAINING A ROW OF HEAT PIPES
Аннотация
This study is concerned with the method of improving
The performance of insulating porous layers. An advanced
insulation technique has been developed by utilizing a
thermal screen consisting of a row of heat pipes with very
high effective thermal conductivity placed in the insulation
layer. An experimental study has been made to clarify the
effects of the thermal screen on the convection heat transfer,
concentrating on how it introduces the uniformity in the
temperature field and reduces the buoyancy force and how it
suppresses the internal convection. It is found that the
thermal screen introduces strong uniformity such that the
temperature distributions approaches the conduction profiles,
resulting in the suppression of the onset of convection. The
critical or transition Rayleigh number is increased depending
on the layout of the heat pipes, confirming the experimental
results on the suppression of convection. Then. it is
concluded that the thermal screen can provide a very
efficient method of control of convection.
