The effect of streamwise concave curvature on subcooled boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) is experimentally documented by using a single boiling surface in both straight and concave curved flow configurations. Subcooling values from 14 to 59 °C, pressures from 1.41 to 1.92 atm, and velocities from 2.4 to 6.9 m/s are tested. Results show that streamwise curvature does not significantly affect onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) or the fully developed nucleate boiling curve. Critical heat flux increases with velocity and subcooling with a different relation for the straight flow than that for the curved flow. Concave curvature enhances CHF when the subcooling is low but its effect diminishes when the subcooling is high. Flow visualization, boiling visualization, and computation are employed to help explain the results. A modified version of a correlation from the literature is applied to correlate the straight-flow data.
