Fluid flow and forced convection heat transfer in plate channels filled with glass, stainless steel or bronze spherical particles was investigated experimentally and numerically. The effects of fluid velocity, particle diameter and particle thermal conductivity were examined for thermal conductivity ranging from 75.3 w/(mK) for bronze to 0.744 W/(mK) for glass and nominal particle sizes of 0.278mm, 0.428mm and 0.7mm. The heat transfer enhancement due to porous media and flow resistance in porous plate channels was analyzed. It was found that the porous media increased the heat transfer coefficient up to 15 times and the hydraulic resistance increased even more. The heat transfer coefficient increased with decreasing stainless steel or bronze particle diameters but decreased with decreasing glass particle diameters. Numerical simulation results using the non-local-thermal equilibrium model with a modified model for thermal dispersion conductivity correspond well to experimental data for both glass porous structures and metallic porous structures.
