Аннотация

Mathematical models for the study of wood pyrolysis and combustion have been developed. Such models require a good estimate of the permeability of the partially charred wood which governs the migration of volatile gases and vapour through wood as well as their emission from the wood surface. Although the permeability for virgin (i.e. uncharred or unconverted) wood and final char have been experimentally determined and arc well documented, the permeability of the partially charred (i.e. still pyrolysing) wood has not been fully investigated. This presents difficulties to the fire modellers. In this paper, we describe research involving both experimental and modelling techniques by which proposed expressions for the permeability of partially charred wood as functions of the mass fraction of virgin wood can be tested. Expressions which have previously been used by other researchers are also examined and discussed. By comparison with the average permeabilities determined experimentally, the expression giving the best prediction is identified and can be used for future mathematical modelling of wood pyrolysis and combustion.
