Аннотация

The mathematical and numerical modeling of the transport processes in manufacturing, particularly in the thermal processing of advanced and emerging materials, is discussed in this paper. Several important processes are considered in detail, including polymer extrusion, glass fiber drawing, chemical vapor deposition, continuous thermal processing, and casting. The governing equations, the relevant boundary conditions and the basic approach to model many of these processes are presented. The importance of material characterization in an accurate mathematical and numerical modeling is brought out, along with the coupling between the process and the resulting properties. The need to link the micro-scale model of the basic transformation process of the material with the macro-scale model of the system, particularly to the imposition of appropriate boundary conditions, is stressed. The critical importance of experimental results in the validation of the mathematical models, as well as in providing quantitative information on the basic mechanisms that arise in different circumstances, is discussed. The various concerns and difficulties that arise due to, for instance, the non-Newtonian behavior of plastics, exponential temperature dependence of glass viscosity, complex geometry, free surface flow, conjugate transport, material movement, chemical reactions, and phase change are considered and some of the important methods to treat these are presented. A few characteristic results are presented on some of the important materials processing techniques and systems.
