Аннотация

Free convection about an isothermal circular cylinder positioned horizontally above a plane is investigated numerically, with the cylinder's surface temperature being higher than that of the surrounding fluid. Both situations of the underlying plane having constant temperature and being insulated are considered. Prandtl number of 0.707, corresponding to air near standard conditions, is used. Effects of the Rayleigh number Ra and of the gap h between the cylinder and the plane on heat transfer are examined. When h is small, smaller Ra values have relatively stronger influence. On the other hand, influence of h decreases quickly as it increases from being very small. In all cases, when the gap is equal to or larger than about 4.5 times the cylinder's diameter, heat transfer from the cylinder is virtually the same as when the underlying plane is not present.
