In order to understand the additive alignment and orientation during a polymer composite fabrication process, we performed a flow visualization experiment. A Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and carbon fiber mixture are utilized as a working fluid inside an orifice flow channel. The channel is formed by machined Al blocks and transparent acrylic windows. PDMS and short carbon fiber mixture is used as the working fluid that imitate a molten polymer composite flow inside a mold during the polymer fabrication process such as an injection molding. The images of the fibers inside the channel are recorded by a high speed camera mounted on a microscope. The angle of the fibers are calculated by an in-house image processing code. The fibers in the center region are found to be randomly oriented while the fibers in the wall regions are aligned to the direction of the flow.
