Simulation of natural convection flow in a square cavity by lattice-Boltzmann method within a wide range of Ra

The rapid development of the Lattice-Boltzmann method provides an alternative method for CFD/NHT. In this paper, The classic benchmark problem − natural convection heat transfer in a square cavity is studied using lattice-Boltzmann method. The two vertical walls of the cavity are kept at constant but different temperatures, while the bottom and top walls are assumed to be adiabatic. An internal energy density distribution function is used to simulate the temperature field, while the velocity field is simulated using the density distribution function. In such a model, the viscous heat dissipation and compression work done by pressure can be easily incorporated. The flows in a wide variation range of Rayleigh numbers (Ra=103 ~ 108) are simulated. Excellent agreement is obtained with previous work done by Barakos and Mitsoulis. All the results demonstrate the potential of the lattice-Boltzmann method for numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer.
