摘要

This paper examines the knowledge structures of the shell and tube heat exchanger thermal design process. It is found that a large number of parallel knowledge structures has to be considered when implementing shell and tube heat exchanger design expertise in expert systems. The possible presence of conflicting design recommendations requires particular consideration in the knowledge implementation process. Distinction can be made between knowledge which draws conclusions or makes design recommendations based on available information and knowledge which describes objects. This paper illustrates the artificial intelligence concepts of production rules and frames as knowledge representation techniques for the two types of knowledge respectively.
