AREA OPTIMIZATION OF SERIES CONNECTED INDUSTRIAL HEAT EXCHANGERS
Abstract
Quite often in industrial facilities a series connected battery of heat exchangers is used, through which a main flow is circulated for heating or cooling transverse flows.
This paper attempts to illustrate by means of a simple example the use of a computer program for a multi-variable optimization problem with non linear restrictions. An objective function is defined, which takes into account the sum of all of the heat transfer areas, that are directly related to manufacturing costs and a set of operational limitations is also fed to a computer program, which in turn minimizes the heat transfer areas for an optimal design.
The example to be presented consists of the area optimization of a widely known battery set of series connected heat exchangers, an industrial or utility type steam generator.
