Abstract

Recent concerns with energy usage have brought about the return of heat exchangers for utilizing some or all of the waste condenser heat from refrigeration or air conditioning systems for domestic or commercial water heating or preheating. Problems facing the designer or user of the "water heating condenser" include being able to predict (a) the effects of the heater - condenser on the overall performance of the complete refrigeration/ air conditioning/heat pump system and (b) the quantity of hot water available from the unit at various water temperature levels and system operating conditions. For one such water heating condenser, experimental data was obtained for a variety of operating conditions. Results show that such combination condensers/water heaters offer significant potential both for providing hot water as well as for reducing the energy consumption of the refrigeration or air-conditioning system over that of a conventional system with an air-cooled condenser.
