Abstract

A mathematical method for determination of the heat transfer effectiveness of a single pass crossflow heat exchanger with both fluids unmixed, accounting for the effect of the nonuniformity of inlet fluid temperature is developed. The exchanger effectivenesses are calculated for the case when the nonuniformity of the inlet temperature is only on one fluid side. Comparison between results of this analysis and those using the arithmetic average inlet temperature is presented and discussed. A nonuniformity Factor of the inlet fluid temperature distribution is suggested as a parameter for estimation of the level of the effect of the inlet temperature maldistribution on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger.
