Abstract

The equations describing combined radiation and natural convection heat transfer in nongray gases enclosed in vertical cavities are developed and solved numerically. The first purpose of the study is to determine what change nongray analysis will bring to the results presented previously for gray media. The second purpose is to compare solutions reached by using either the P-1 approximation or a formulation based on the exponential wide band model. Convection-radiation interactions in various flow regimes for pure gases at a mean temperature of 600K are investigated. It is found that all the general trends obtained with the gray analysis are confirmed. However, the solutions based on the P-1 appromation are shown to greatly overestimate the interaction .
