AN IMPROVED THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF HYPERBOLIC COOLING TOWERS
Abstract
A mathematical model of the physical processes taking place in a cooling tower, uses the mass, momentum and energy equations. A numerical solution, using the appropriate boundary conditions provides the air velocity and water temperatures in the radial direction. This is a considerable improvement over earlier design methods which take no account of radial variations in water temperature. The mean recooled water temperature predicted by the model is in excellent agreement with measured values on large scale hyperbolic cooling towers. The confirmed model allows for the thermodynamic assessment of important parameters concerned with the geometry of the tower and also the parameters associated with the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the packing and spray.
