Abstract

As an example of the processes causing the physical deterioration of monuments in stone, the cooling of a well soaked cylindrical sample of "pietra-sperone" has been studied both theoretically and experimentally, in view of simulating the conditions in which structural damages are caused by the freezing/melting cycles of the water retained within the pores of the stone. The agreement between experimental observations and theoretical predictions appears to be satisfactory, notwithstanding the various simplifications used in the model.
